"Hire the right people. They are the living, breathing carriers of your culture. Use clearly articulated and understood values to drive how you behave, communicate, and make decisions. Don't just throw those values up on a wall. Who cares? Create experiences where people feel the values by doing. Demonstrate your values in how you live, work, and interact with each other. Show not tell.”

Examples of values lived:
  • Employee-Hosted Dinners - Aligned with their Core Value, “Be a Host”, Airbnb provides stipends for a "AirFamily Dinners" where employees sign up to host dinner in their homes. Guest lists are intentionally made up of people who are least likely to work together so that new bonds are created.
  • Create a Core Values Week - Fukuji and Lum Physical Therapy created N.I.C.E. Values Spirit Week for their four values: Nurture Relationships, Integrity, Contribution, and Embrace Change + Encourage Growth. They dedicate each day to one value and organize activities aligned with living and celebrating it.
  • Bookend your weekly All Hands Call with 3-5 minutes of culture - Delivering Happiness starts with a segment called “One Word”, where we ask one question such as, “What’s one thing you’ve learned in the last quarter?” or “What one thing you are grateful for today?”. This connects to Core Value #7 - “Build Community and Meaningful Relationships”. The call ends with a “Purpose in Action” segment where we show client impact + inspiration stories, which maps to Core Value #10 - “Create Change in the World More Than You Ever Thought Possible”.
