Do you know what some of the top killers in today’s society are? I bet you can guess, but in case you can't, they are:

- Cancer

- Stroke

- Type II Diabetes

I have heard these maladies mentioned in the media for years now. I've read up on each one, learning how more and more people are affected by them in the modern era than ever before. But it wasn’t until each one reared it's head within my own family that those statistics became real to me.

The saddest part about each of these afflictions is that all of them could potentially have been prevented which makes me even more determined to help other people, to educate and support others in their quest for better health and not have to become a number and be part of a statistic.

I am lucky and happy to have my family alive and whole, everyone having made it through their ordeals. After our lives had all calmed down, I found myself compelled to reach out, to make a difference, and to help others lead the kinds of happy, healthy lives that would prevent them from finding themselves in similar circumstances, and now want to share with you now the top 4 things you can do to be healthy and happy.

To me health and happiness go hand in hand.

1: Have meaningful relationships and careers. Engage in your community and do some type of physical activity. Many times if we do not it leaves us feeling “hungry.” And we reach out for food which can lead to weight gain and a whole list of health problems like the ones I mentioned above.

2:  Time management. We lead busy lives running between work, family, friends. Busy lifestyles promote fast food and eating on the run. Often people feel they just don’t have time to cook. Slow down and try cooking your own healthy dishes as much as possible. Go for the whole grains, fresh vegetables (or they can be cooked too) and fruits, get the best produce you can.

3: Ditch processed foods. They are cheap, convenient and usually full of sodium, sugar, chemicals  and empty calories.

4:  Get the right information. The world is full of misinformation and disinformation when it comes to what is healthy, what we should be doing and eating. We are bombarded with information about food, nutritional data, health benefits and risks; often by special interest groups. People are generally confused about what they are supposed to eat. Talk to your doctor, nurse, or other medical practitioner early, BEFORE you actually find yourself needing their services, and then take the next step. Make the changes in your life that they recommend.
