Summary: The Happiness at Work survey has had 11,000 participants so far and is yielding useful information.

Early findings of the HappinessatWork survey indicate employee happiness is associated with a number of factors. So far 11,000 users have taken the survey so the sample size is large enough its insights might be quite useful. Some of the results are a little surprising.

- Working in a smaller organization with 100 or less people. Employees of smaller organizations are about 25% more likely to be happy than those working in large organizations with 1,000.

- Working in a skilled trade may generate more happiness for some, because skilled workers tend to be happier.

- Working as a caregiver is likely to generate more happiness as well. People working in that role are about 75% more likely to be happy than those who are working in sales.

- Supervising others is associated with more happiness, rather than being supervised.

The survey is just 47 questions and requires about ten minutes to complete. It was created by Nic Marks, who is a well-being researcher and has been a guest blogger on this site. It is also a project that was made for Delivering Happiness at Work, which was co-founded by Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh.

To make the links a little more clear, Hsieh is also the author of the top-selling book Delivering Happiness. In it he describes his life and career path which began with entrepreneurship and start-ups, to becoming very interested in happiness and how it can be enhanced in the workplace. The insights about company culture and selecting only the employees who embody it are tied directly to the survey and work of Delivering Happiness at Work, which helps organizations create more happiness in order to increase profits.
