The Shift at SIX

During this year's SXSW in Austin, Delivering Happiness CEO Jenn Lim met up with one of our big supporters, co-owner of SIX Lounge, John Korioth to talk about how he and his team turned the company around.

“We wanted a change, but didn't know how,” said John. However, after a coworker did a tour of the Zappos Headquarters and shared the Zappos Culture Book with him, John was inspired with a new vision for company culture. Meeting Jenn Lim and Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh only further fueled the fire and before they knew it, SIX was ready to get the wheels of change a-turning! We felt a surge of excitement reading his story, and even more thrilled that we had a chance to catch up with John at SXSW.

If you're looking to catalyze a shift in your own company's culture, John has some great advice to kick it off. First, look at yourself as an owner and find ways to personally improve yourself before asking others to do the same. After initiating that first step, the real hard work begins. How do you make cultural changes sustainable and scalable? Simple. Instill a unified vision. For John and his crew, that vision was, “we are the best!” Then, all you need to do is apply that vision in every facet of your company. It's also crucial to keep the vision in mind when recruiting and hiring new people.
