Who's Happier: Introverts or Extroverts?

According to standard research, extroverts are happier than introverts. They certainly can appear happy, so that seems to make sense. But according to a new study, introverts may be just as happy, but are more reluctant to show it. New information from researchers at Minnesota's College of St. Olaf postulates that when tested, extroverts are likely to give more extreme answers than introverts.

From Psychology Today's column "The Introvert's Corner," author Sophia Dembling gives this example: "if asked to rate on a scale of 1 to 5 how happy they are, extroverts are more likely to choose 5! Wheeeeee! than introverts." Aha!  As a total introvert, this blogger can definitely see some truth in this study. On a scale of 1 to 5, I like the sound of a 4, even though I consider myself pretty darn happy.

What does all this mean? Well, researchers aren't sure yet, although it appears to be helpful information in the attempt to find out how to maximize happiness for all kinds of personality types. Read on to learn more about the science behind the study.

What about you? Are you an introvert or an extrovert? Are you proclaiming your happiness from the rooftops or quietly enjoying yourself with a hot cup o' coffee and a good book?
